James Fenimore Cooper was born in 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, and grew up in Cooperstown, a settlement his own father had founded at the edge of a rapidly changing landscape. He left Yale without graduating, served in the merchant marine and the US Navy, and turned to writing in his thirties, largely by accident.

"The Last of the Mohicans," published in 1826, was his breakthrough. It gave American prose fiction its first sustained international readership and established the frontier as legitimate literary territory. No American novelist had done that before him.
