Dante Alighieri was born in Florence, Italy, in 1265. In 1302, he was exiled from his hometown under threat of death if he returned, forcing him to spend the remaining two decades of his life wandering through northern Italy.

During his long exile, Dante composed his masterpiece, the Divine Comedy, introducing the terza rima rhyme scheme designed to ensure the structural integrity of his poetic journey through the afterlife.
