How we decide what gets selected next.
How we decide what gets selected next.
Timeless editions are not selected to reflect current cultural trends or commercial demand. They are selected because they represent unavoidable works of classical literature — texts whose exclusion would leave a serious reader's formation incomplete.

A library, not a syllabus.

A library, not a syllabus.
The Timeless programme has no prescribed order. Works are chosen individually, each on its own merits, for what they have given readers across generations and what they still give a reader who picks them up today.

This means a reader can enter at any point and receive a complete edition. What accumulates over time is a library — one that reflects the range and depth of the literary tradition at its most enduring.

"The question is never: what is popular? The question is: what must be read to understand what literature has been, and what it still is?"

01
Literary necessity
Is this work unavoidable? Does its exclusion produce a materially impoverished understanding of the tradition's development? Works that are merely celebrated are not sufficient. Only works that are structurally necessary to understanding the canon qualify.

02
Translational integrity
Can Timeless select a translation that meets its editorial standards? If the available scholarship does not support a rigorous bilingual edition, the work is deferred until the appropriate translation exists or can be produced.

03
Sequential coherence
Does this work belong at this point in the programme? The sequence is constructed so that each edition illuminates what follows and deepens what precedes it. Works that are philosophically necessary may nonetheless be deferred to a position in the sequence where they will land with greater force.

04
Editorial readiness
Is the scholarly apparatus — introduction, notes, contextual materials — of sufficient quality to accompany the text? The edition is not released until every element of the editorial apparatus meets the standard applied to the primary text.

Timeless does not publish abridged editions, adapted versions, or simplified retellings as primary editions. Every Timeless edition centres on a primary literary text, presented in full and without reduction.

Timeless does not select works based on their contemporary cultural relevance, commercial performance in the classics category, or recent popular attention. The programme is indifferent to such considerations. It is attentive only to the internal demands of the literary tradition being constructed.

The Timeless programme is developed with a rolling horizon. Works confirmed for the near term are in active editorial production. Works identified for the medium term are in pre-production — translation selection, scholarly introductions, and physical specifications are being developed in parallel.

Members are not given advance notice of upcoming titles except through the editorial notes that accompany each edition, which situate the current work within the wider sequence and point toward the themes the next edition will address.
